Call for Hosts
What is the exchange program?
You “host” data scientists from Germany (doctoral researchers or postdocs) and work with them on a project of your choice.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this exchange program is planned as follows:
- If travel is not possible by summer 2022, you will work with data scientists virtually (as side projects to their studies/work) – with the possibility to conclude your project onsite once travel becomes possible again (up until Dec 2023).
- If travel is possible in summer 2022, you will host German data scientists at your lab for six weeks and get to work with them onsite.
Travel expenses and accommodation for your visitors from Germany are covered by the Helmholtz Information & Data Science Academy.
The Israeli universities, through their Data Science research centers and faculty research funds, will finance Israeli students participating in Germany. (The approximate travel and accommodation costs in Germany for 6 week stays at a Helmholtz Institute are about 3000 Euro – with some variability depending on accommodation options at the various centers.)
Why should I host data scientists from Germany?
- It’s an opportunity to inspire German data science talent with your research and get international collaborations started with the next generation of data scientists.
- Six weeks of hands-on help from savvy data scientists and data scientists in training for your projects.
What is expected from me as a host?
- Provision of and mentoring for a data science problem that can be solved with a tangible outcome (e.g. contribution to a paper or open source project) within six weeks.
- Possibilities to make use of necessary resources remotely (e.g. access to data, computing resources, programs and tools.)
- Hospitality at your lab if travel is possible (e.g. workplace, introduction to and usage of all necessary infrastructure, programs and tools, welcoming integration into your team.)
How do I take part?
In order to become a host, please describe your data science project for potential participants in the questionnaire by January 20, 2022. Potential participants will see this description and apply to your project. We will forward their applications to you.
What’s the timeline?
- Deadline for sending us your project description is January 20, 2022.
- Project applications open February 10, 2022.
- Project applications close April 30, 2022.
- You receive a list of eligible applicants by May 16, 2022.
- Participants are informed by end of May.
- Projects/exchanges can start anytime thereafter. Onsite visits can take place until December 2023.

HIDA – The Helmholtz Information & Data Science Academy – is Germany’s largest postgraduate training network in information and data science. We prepare the next generation of scientists for a data-heavy future of research. HIDA connects and serves as the umbrella organization for 6 newly founded data science research schools linked by a network of 14 national research centers and 17 top-tier universities across Germany. By 2025, these data science research schools will train over 250 fully funded doctoral researchers. The doctoral researchers will deepen their knowledge in data science methods and learn to combine knowledge from the six Helmholtz research areas – energy, earth and environment, health, aeronautics, space and transport, matter, and information – with data science methods. For these purposes, all doctoral researchers receive dual supervision in data science and their scientific domain. In addition, HIDA offers doctoral researchers and scientists attractive opportunities to obtain training and continuing education in a wide range of methods and to become part of an international data science network.
