CALL FOR HOSTS: Exchange Program with Germany & UK

Helmholtz Association, the British Council and IDSI offer exciting research in the field of Data Science

Get to know data science top talent from Germany's and UK's leading research institutes and work with them on your projects. Learn more about how to start a fruitful exchange here.

What is the exchange program?

The exchange program was launched in 2021 by HIDA and the Israel Data Science Initiative (IDSI), to enable young data science talents from Germany and Israel to engage in international research collaboration.

It was developed with the idea of giving students from abroad the opportunity to get to know and work with Israeli researchers on exciting six-week research projects in the field of Data Science and Information. After two successful years, we are happy to announce that we are piloting the inclusion of the UK in this program next year. Apply now

We are happy to partner again with Helmholtz Association for this program. For the first time, the British Council and the UK Science & Innovation Network are participating as partners as well.

For the UK, a selected number of Data Science research institutions/universities will take part in this year’s call. These will be confirmed in January.

What is the value of such a program?

It's an opportunity to inspire German and British data science talents with your research and get international collaborations started with the next generation of data scientists.

Six weeks of hands-on help from savvy data scientists and data scientists in training for your projects.

How does the exchange program work?

You host data scientists from Germany (PhD-Postdoc) or the UK (Phd-Postdoc) and work with them on a project of your choice for six weeks.

Is the program financially supported?

Each country supports its own students financially with a budget for travel expenses and accommodation. The Helmholtz Academy for Information and Data Sciences covers the costs for Helmholtz participants, the British Council and the UK Science & Innovation network will provide a number of travel grants for participants from the UK and IDSI or the corresponding Israeli home institute for participants from Israel.

What is expected from me as a host?

Provision of and mentoring for a data science problem that can be solved with a tangible outcome (e.g. contribution to a paper or open source project) within six weeks.

Possibilities to make use of necessary resources remotely (e.g. access to data, computing resources, programs and tools.)

Hospitality at your lab if travel is possible (e.g. workplace, introduction to and usage of all necessary infrastructure, programs and tools, welcoming integration into your team.)

How do I take part?

In order to become a host, please describe your data science project for potential participants in the application form (press “apply now”) by January 30, 2023.

Potential participants will see this description and apply to your project. We will forward their applications to you. Apply now
