30. Deep learning and mathematical modelling in hematopathology

We develop and apply tools for the processing, analysis and modeling of single cell data. This allows us to study molecular dynamics beyond the population averages of traditional approaches and reveal cell-to-cell heterogeneities. In close collaboration with our experimental partners, we apply our tools to the analysis of single cell dynamics in microscopy images and the description of stem cell decisions.

What is the data science project’s research question?   Can we merge mechanistic models with deep learning approaches to detect blood disorders? Can we merge mechanistic models with deep learning approaches to detect blood disorders?

What data will be worked on?   Thousands of single cell images from blood smears

What tasks will this project involve?   Familiarize with hematpoiesis (the production of blood), mechanistic models describing the process, and AI algorithms to classify single cells.

What makes this project interesting to work on? Link between mechanistic models and deep learning

What is the expected outcome?  Contribution to research paper 

What infrastructure, programs and tools will be used? Can they be used remotely?  if necessary the local GPU cluster can be used from remote.

Interested candidates should be at Phd level. Carsten is looking for 1 visiting scientist, working on the project together with the team.
